"AWAY WE GO" ... This very special movie makes going out to the theater not only worthwhile, but a cinematic treat. I am mad at myself for not posting a review earlier while it was still in the theaters, but at least now I can strongly recommend that you place the rental of this film at the very top of your list. With all of the summer blockbuster movies out there, this remains one of the few summer movies that has stayed with me. Simply put, I love this film, its quirky characters, and its off the wall plot centering around a road trip of a young unmarried couple about to become parents for the first time.

Burt Farlander (John Krasinski) and Verona De Tessant (Maya Rudolph) are the young, unmarried couple who live near Denver, Colorado. They have been together for years, and are now looking forward to their first child. Burt likes the idea of marriage, but Verona will have none of it. Maybe it is because both of her parents are dead from circumstances that she is reluctant to discuss, but perhaps also it is because she has a successful job while the less ambitious Burt flails around trading on the internet.

They live near Denver to be near his parents, and they both have every expectation that Gloria Farlander (Catherine O'Hara) and Jerry Farlander (Jeff Daniels) will be doting grandparents who will help out, thus making their lives much easier. However, they receive the shock of their lives when Gloria and Jerry announce out of the blue that they are moving to Europe because that is something that they have always wanted to do.

With this parental bedrock of support soon to be removed, Burt and Verona set off on a round the country road trip to find out who they are and what their relationship means when examined in the light of how their siblings, former coworkers, and friends cope on the family front.

I have not heretofore been familiar with John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph, but they are most impressive in this movie. It simply wouldn't work if they had been less convincing as two doubting young adults who still deeply care for and love each other enough to want to face the future together. While John Krasinski is good, Maya Rudolph is a revelation. Neither actor has movie star good looks, but I could not take my eyes off Rudolph. She is a sensational actress and absolutely magnetic on the screen. This movie just sparkles! (A, See It, Rent It, Buy It!)
